Inspired by the wit of Shel Silverstein, the eccentricity of John Prine, with a dash of Spike Jones and Ray Stevens thrown in for good measure, Billy Mitchell’s songs resonate, involve and entertain, spanning emotionally from heartfelt to hilarious.
He has been performing for over 30 years locally and regionally in notable venues including: Boston's Dick's Last Resort - The House of Blues in L.A. - The Brooklyn Tea & Coffee House, Providence, RI • The Towers, Narragansett, RI • The Vanilla Bean Songwriter Series, Pomfret, Conn.• North East Regional Folk Alliance, Kerhonson, NY • Providence Performing Arts Center, Prov375 Celebration • Ocean State Follies,Holiday Show • Courthouse Center for the Arts, Kingston, RI • Firehouse Theatre, Newport, RI • Music at Lily Pads, Wakefield, RI - Sandywoods Center for the Arts - Fort Adams. He has also made numerous radio and television appearances.
Comfortable with any sized crowd, his specialty is intimate venues (decks, private parties, house concerts ) where he can connect with the audience and draw from his unique original material and a large repertoire of cover songs that are like the soundtrack of a generation. Billy originally sang in a cappella doo-wop quartet The Hudsons, and is front man for Classic Rock band New York Minute, in addition to solo shows.
His CD, DETOUR was nominated Best Americana Album of 2012 by Motif Magazine. An emancipated advertising agency creative director, Billy has written many radio commercials and jingles. (A music video received a nationally recognized Telly award).
Billy is a published ASCAP songwriter, an active Board Member of the Rhode Island Songwriters Association and an unabashed Boomer.
